Iago

How honesty relates to Iago….
o       He pretends to be honest
o       Everyone uses the phrase ‘honest lago’
o       His honest reputation ruins everyone
o       He believes everyone is as dishonest as he is, like his wife, Cassio and Othello

METAPHORS are also used, Iago calls himself a devil because of his continuous lies and deceit. Like with repetition, tis shows that in Shakespere’s time, dishonesty and manipulation was something to be associated witht he devil and develps Iago’s character as pure evil.
This is a photo of Lago and you can see the anger in his eyes. Anger is what fueled his plans to destroy Othello as he believed he should have received the position of general.

The use of REPETITION, is very influential in getting the theme of honesty across. Iago is constantly referred to as “honest Iago” and when a character is talked about in a positive light, they are described as “honest.” This repetition makes us never forget that honesty is an important quality and is held in high regard.

Othello to Cassio

“Iago is most honest”

Othello II.iii.7

Cassio to Iago

“I humbly thank you for’t. I never knew a Florentine more kind and honest.
(tells Cassio he’s going to distract Othello while he talks to Desdemona)

Othello III.i.39
This video is important because this is Iagos second sililoquy which unveals his true character, how he hates the moor, and how he is going to manipulate others, mainly Rodriego.
